The Front of the Peghead.

  • Dark ebony was used as the wood for the front of the peghead, giving maximum contrast for the shell inlay.
  • The peghead was fully bound along the outer edges with white-black-white plastic edge binding which was mitered at all the corners. The decorative abalone inner binding was made of 17 pieces of abalone heart matched and aligned for color and shine, making it look like one continuous piece of shell that frames the peghead.
  • The floral inlay on the peghead was composed of 38 pieces of mother-of-pearl, abalone and paua. The stamen were made of 21 small pieces of copper and brass.
  • Extra long mother-of-pearl shell pieces were used so that the long stems of the vine have minimal interruption.
  • The nut was made of mother-of-pearl. The nut holds the strings at the proper separation before they go down the neck.
