The Saga Style III features a rim design inspired by the banjos of William Lange in the early 1900's and the Ode Banjo Company in the 1960's.

Charles Ogsbury, founder of Ode and then of Ome Banjos experimented with arch-top integral tone rings (where the tone ring was cast into the wall of the aluminum rim). There were many experiments with the aluminum rim in an effort to cut back on unwanted overtones and gave a cleaner response. His final version evolved into a one-piece cast closed chamber system, similar to the Gibson arch-top. Read an interesting history of the Ome Banjo Company and the people involved in it.

The flathead design used in the SS-3 has been around since Saga introduced it in the 1970's. The tone ring is a heavy reinforced band that is cast as part of the aluminum alloy rim. The result is a clarity of tone, as well as the quick attack and rapid decay that pickers expect in a quality flathead banjo. This design has stood the test of time, having been first used on the Mastertone Banjos of the Gibson Mandolin Guitar Company of Kalamazoo, Michigan. The Saga Style III Banjo was designed for the advanced student or professional and has a great bluegrass sound. The Saga Style III neck and resonator are superbly crafted of mahogany. The fingerboard is East Indian Rosewood with mother-of-pearl position markers. How does the Saga SS-3 banjo compare with a similar Deering model? Read the Comparison!
