Beau Brummel 5-String Banjo

This unlabeled Beau Brummel banjo was made circa 1890's and is in good playable condition. The fingerboard and peghead have well done iridescent pearl inlays. The inlay at the 5th fret shows past repair and will be further fixed. The rim consisting of 30 brackets and "L-shaped" shoes and round hooks. Most of the original brass hooks are present. The remaining steel hooks are new. The shoes are held on by hex head screws. The rim is a bent 1/4" piece of hardwood clad with a nickel-plated brass sheathing. The rim metal is is rolled over both on top and bottom, giving the banjo a nice appearance and clean sound. The rim measures 11" and has an interesting good conditioned skin head. The engraved and gold-plated brass tension hoop is thick and is in good shape.

The hardwood neck is made of oak or perhaps cherry. The fingerboard appears to be ebony with pearl inlays. The fingerboard has a few visualy flaws on the fingerboard which will be repaired. Measurement at the nut is 1-3/16" and the scale length is 25-1/2". The peghead has a pear wood overlay with an inlaid multi-sectioned pearl star. The tuning pegs are all original and in good working order. The banjo has an original No-Knot tailpiece. The banjo is very playable and has a relatively straight neck with a slight upward lift. The neck is straight enough that it has good action up and down the neck. The banjo has been setup well and produces a nice and clear oldtime sound.
